Nice Kitty…

Today, we fed lions.
Out of the palm of our hands.
No joke.

Wellington Zoo offer ‘close encounters’ with some of their animals – opportunities to meet them up close.  Pat them.  Feed them.  Just generally make all your dreams come true.

Well, they don’t let you pet the lions.  200kg of teeth and muscle can be a little unpredictable… but you can pet the others.

The session was awesome – a once in a lifetime type of thing.
How many people can say they’ve been licked by a lion?! (It feels like sandpaper, btw).

And all off the back of a great Sunday morning session at the gym.  Endorphins!

My Sunday was great.  One to remember for a while.
What did you get up to this weekend?

A Good Day For a Stroll

IMG_20150102_184817

Since getting back home in the city for New Years, I’ve been able to get back to the gym a bit.  It’s great – Wellington’s not really a summer destination so everyone clears out of the city and places like the gym are empty.  You’re almost guaranteed to get the gear you’re after.  No waiting.  It’s great.

But when the sun comes out, you have to make the most of it – get outside and enjoy the fresh air!

We’ve had a run of good weather recently (except New Years Eve, because this is Wellington and that would have been too easy.  See earlier ‘not really a summer destination’ comment) so we planned to have a walk around to the seal colony at Red Rocks.

There weren’t any seals – it’s the completely wrong time of year (we’d need to be there in winter).  But the walk was good.

Great company. Good views.

Nice start to the day.

Learned a couple of things today, too.

  1. Bees like purple.  Don’t have purple on or around your crotch.  This can lead to very tense moments.
  2. Always wear sunblock.  Always.  And it you think you have enough on, put some more on anyway.
  3. You don’t have to sit down to get sand in your pants, unfortunately. (WTF?  Wellington, you’re a creepy kind of windy).  Also, bonus lesson: you never grow out of it.

Yup.  You learn something new everyday.

What did you get up to today?
What did you learn?

Back on the Horse

imageI’m back, and just in time for Christmas!

This morning I was forced gently guided to the gym where I got my glorious sweat on.  It was as glamorous as it sounds… but damn I felt good afterwards.

Well, the endorphins did.
Right now I just feel like I fell off the horse.  At speed.  Down a bank.

It. Is. Great.

One of the Best Decisions I Ever Made

Signing up for regular personal training sessions was one of the best decisions I have ever made.  It’s right up there with deciding to take my health into my own hands.  Of course, one wouldn’t have happened without the other.

We are our decisions.  The good ones, and the bad.

Together, they all add up – hopefully, with the good ones outnumbering the bad.

But when you make a really good one – and follow through with it – you get a bucketload of sweet life bonus points that torpedoes you toward your ultimate goal.

To be healthy.
To be fit.

To take charge of my own life, and make it what I want, rather than let things just happen to me.

Personal training has been so empowering.
The weight and measurement changes are a happy bonus.

I’m using free weights on my own now – something that terrified me to do with the trainer when I started.  I’m learning to read my body, understand correct form, and have the confidence in myself to know when I can (and can’t) do something.

I have core strength.  Long have I ignored my core.
Ab work?  What’s the point when I have a hefty 10kg to budge?
A strong core helps everything work better.  Those free weights… can’t handle those babies without decent core work, too.

And I’m a giant sweaty sweat monster at the end of every session now.  Every session.
Previously, nada.  Nothing.  Vilch.

Sweaty, and wobbly legged, I leave every session feeling like I’ve done a job well done.
Like I’m another step closer to my ultimate goal.
Like I’m on top of the world.

These training sessions give me confidence, endorphins, and a reason to be proud of myself.
Worth every penny.

I’d even go as far as to say priceless.

If At First You Don’t Succeed

Attempt two of the new plan went much better than the first go… well, the ab work at least.

A good, sweaty workout.  In a very humid gym.  Oh Lord was it sweaty.

And I enjoyed it!  It was good to get out of my funk and thrash my body a little.  Okay, not thrash so much as just a bloody good workout.

Went a little crazy on the leg press… might feel that one tomorrow.

The only catch?  I was super hungry at the end of it, and really should have had something on hand to eat rather than wait the hour it took to get home and cook.

I’m thinking a protein bar of some description.  Anyone know any good protein that aren’t packed with sugar?
Bonus points to those who can recommend something you can buy here in NZ!

Worst comes to worst, I’ll just carry around chunks of cold chicken… but that’ll be all warm and gross in my gym bag…
